We grow 150 tonnes of intercrop each year for the pigs. For the weaner pigs, generally between 4 and 12 weeks old, we supplement their feed with organic soya grown in the EU. We use 4 tonnes per year of this. Ultimately our aim is to produce a 100% forage fed animal all year round. Our pigs are a hybrid of rare-breed Tamworth and Large Black crossed with Saddleback or Duroc - slow growing pigs with exceptional flavour, finished at a minimum of 10 months old. Between April and October you’ll find our pigs grazing herbal leys - species rich mixtures of legumes, grasses and forbs (nutritionally dense, medicating & soil conditioning wonders!). The pigs instincts to root proves too destructive for the long-term leys over winter so we graze multispecies cover crops instead.
